Fix Your Trail Arm = Fix Your Strike
Today we’re talking about trail arm structure — the right arm (for right-handed golfers) in the backswing.
This is something I see golfers get wrong all the time.
What often happens is the right arm bends the wrong way. Instead of folding and rotating properly, it ends up working outwards, collapsing the structure of the backswing and making everything else harder.
When that happens, golfers then have to rescue the swing on the way down. Let me explain…
What we’re actually trying to do:
In a good backswing, the trail arm should…
Bend naturally ✅
Rotate internally ✅
And allow the club to move over the trail shoulder ✅
If you simply rotate your trail shoulder, bend the wrist back slightly, and keep that arm moving inward rather than outward, you’ll start to see positions that aren’t far off what the best players in the world are doing.
The drill that helps you feel it:
Here’s a really good way to build the correct structure…
Grab a mid iron; something like an 8 iron.
Support your trail arm with your lead hand near the top of the arm.
Now as you make a backswing:
Let the right wrist bend back ✅
Turn your shoulders ✅
And gently pull that trail arm inward ✅
What you’re trying to feel is the club moving over your right shoulder and beyond, while the arm structure stays intact. The vide above explains this all in full.
