Newsletter #154 - How To Hit Your Long Irons Higher AND Further

Let's talk long irons.

For plenty of golfers, a hybrid is going to be the easier option – more loft, easier launch and generally a little more forgiveness.

But if you have a 3 or 4-iron in the bag, you need to understand what makes these clubs work.

And there's one big misconception we need to get rid of first...

You DON'T need to sweep them off the ground.

Long irons still need a downward strike…

A good long-iron shot is still struck with the club travelling down into the ball.

The difference is that you're now trying to launch a much lower-lofted club.

That means you need speed.

Take too much speed away and even a beautifully struck 4-iron can simply fall out of the air.

So the goal is to combine a good downward strike with enough speed and launch to actually get the most from the club.

Let me explain…

Build your setup for power:

✔ Don't push the ball excessively forward

✔ Create a stable, slightly wider stance

✔ Commit to a bigger shoulder turn

✔ Use the lead leg to push away from the ground through impact

Long irons aren't really clubs you can casually guide around the course if you're already towards the limit of the speed needed to launch them.

You need to commit.
