The Secret Skill Better Golfers DON'T Even Know They Have
There’s a ball-striking skill that almost every good golfer develops.
The strange thing is, many of them probably don’t even know they have it.
They might not be able to explain exactly what they’re doing, but put them on different lies, ask them to hit different shots or change how they deliver the golf club and they can instinctively adapt.
Most higher handicappers are very different.
They tend to have one delivery pattern and if that pattern is hurting their strike, they simply repeat the same problem over and over again.
Sound familiar?
So how do you learn the skill better players have?
Well, I’m going to ask you to do something that sounds completely MENTAL…
I want you to practise getting it WRONG.
Let me show you…
Learn the extremes to find the middle
As you saw in the video, we’re talking about the dynamic lie angle of the golf club — and for most golfers I coach, the common pattern is delivering the club too toe-down.
The body pushes towards the ball, the hands work upwards and the handle gets more upright.
That can have a huge effect on:
❌ Strike
❌ Power
❌ Consistency
❌ How your body moves through the shot

TOE UP → NEUTRAL → TOE DOWN…
Rather than simply trying to find the “perfect” delivery every time, I want you to learn how to deliberately produce all three, as detailed above…
If you can learn to find both extremes on purpose, you start developing the awareness and control needed to find the middle much more consistently.
And you don’t need a launch monitor to practise it.
Draw a straight line on your golf ball with a Sharpie and position that line vertically against the clubface. Hit the shot and look at the mark it leaves behind.
If the line is straight up the face, you’re somewhere around neutral. If it’s tilted, you’ve got instant feedback on how you delivered the club.
Then make it a game.
Try to move the line one way ✅
Try to move it the other ✅
Then see how close you can get to straight ✅
Learn to get it wrong on purpose, and you might finally learn what getting it right actually feels like.

Something close to my heart…
What I would consider my home club (where I grew up learning the game of golf) is in the process of raising funds for a cancer charity that is close to my heart, and that of some of the members who helped me on my way in the world of golf.
If there is anything you can contribute to the cause, no matter how big or small, please use the QR code below.
No pressure, no expectations, just some charitable outreach on my part if this is something you can get behind…
I hope you enjoyed this issue and it helps your game!
Please reply to this email with requests for future topics you would like me to cover.
Have a great weekend!
