The Secrets to Hitting 3-Wood Off the Deck...

Newsletter #140: How To Hit Your Fairway Woods from The Deck (Part 1)

Over the next three weeks, we’re going to tackle one of the hardest shots in golf for so many players: 3-wood from the deck.

First, let’s take a look at the biggest misconception I see among students all…the…time!

You should be hitting DOWN on the ball…NOT trying to sweep it off the floor.

Let me explain…

QUICK RECAP: The biggest misunderstanding…

Most golfers think they should be:

  • Sweeping the ball ❌

  • Picking it clean ❌

  • Or even trying to hit up on it ❌

🚨 That’s the problem 🚨

When I measure good 3-woods off the ground, the club is still travelling:
✔ Slightly downward
✔ Ball first
✔ Then brushing the turf (or even taking a small divot…this is OK!)

Not as steep as an iron…but definitely not up.

The KEY checkpoints:

Before you hit your next fairway wood off the deck:
✔ Ball near lead heel
✔ Neutral handle
✔ Wider stance
✔ Add movement and intent

The more static and deliberate you get, the harder it becomes to launch the ball properly.

Something close to my heart…

What I would consider my home club (where I grew up learning the game of golf) is in the process of raising funds for a cancer charity that is close to my heart, and that of some of the members who helped me on my way in the world of golf.

If there is anything you can contribute to the cause, no matter how big or small, please use the QR code below.

No pressure, no expectations, just some charitable outreach on my part if this is something you can get behind…

I hope you enjoyed this issue and it helps your game!

Please reply to this email with requests for future topics you would like me to cover.

Have a great Easter weekend!
