The Setup Move That Unlocks Your Backswing...

Newsletter #128: How To Build a Proper Backswing Episode 1 (3-Part Series):

Welcome to this 3-part series about building a better backswing. Here’s the thing; your backswing is your run-up for the golf swing. Get it wrong, and the critical moment (impact) can be a lot more difficult that it needs to be. Let me explain…

If your backswing is in a good position, the downswing often just flows.
If it’s a mess, you spend the rest of the swing trying to fix it. We don’t want this. Compensatory moves are what kills 90% of golf swings.

Over the top? That's a compensation. Flipping your hands? Compensation. Chicken wing follow through? Yep…you guessed it...compensating for something you could have fixed earlier on in your move.

When it comes to messing up the backswing, most of the time, the issue starts before you even move the club…

Setup dictates your turn:

The amount you tilt at setup massively affects:

  • How much you can turn

  • Whether you maintain good shoulder tilt

  • And how consistent your strike becomes

Too upright? ❌ You restrict your turn.

Too much tilt? ❌ You can rotate more, but you lose control of your shoulder tilts.

No tilt at all? ❌ Your turn gets limited and everything feels tight.

It’s amazing how much your backswing changes just from how you stand to the ball…

What we’re trying to achieve:

With irons, we want…

  • A slight forward bend from the hips (around 40°)

  • Shoulders roughly over the middle of the toes

  • A small, natural tilt away from the target

Not exaggerated ❌
Not forced ❌
Just enough to let the shoulders turn properly and maintain tilt ✅

That’s it. That one move creates the shift we’re looking for. Let me explain properly in the video above…
