Try This Before Your Next Iron Shot...

Newsletter #146 - The On-Course Fix for Heavy Iron Strikes:

You’ve started your round…

A couple of swings in and something just feels off; the strikes are a little heavy. You’re catching the ground before the ball. This isn’t going to add up to a good score if you can’t hit a green…

Sound familiar?

Rest assured, it’s incredibly common, especially if you haven’t had much chance to warm up properly. (I bet that sounds familiar too 😂)

The good news is there’s a really simple drill you can use on the course to help move your strike (low point) forward again…

Why poor starts happen:

When we’re a little stiff or not fully switched on, a lot of golfers start turning behind the ball.

  • Body moves away ⬅️

  • Arms follow 👋

  • The club bottoms out too early 💥

That’s where those heavy strikes come from.

Why the drill above works…

Instead of your body drifting away from the target, you're encouraging it to stay centred over the strike.

That helps:

✔ Move the low point forward
✔ Strike the ball before the turf
✔ Get rid of those heavy contacts

It's such a simple adjustment, but it can make a HUGE difference when you're still warming into your round.

Even if you only 5 minutes to hit a few balls in the nets before you tee off, this drill could save you from a poor start to your round!

I love using this as a rehearsal even while I’m mid-round, so before you hit your next iron…

  • Make one or two split-stance practice swings ✅

  • Feel yourself turning over the ball ✅

  • Then step into your normal setup and recreate that same feeling ✅

You don't need to think about it during the swing.

Just let the rehearsal do the work.

Something close to my heart…

What I would consider my home club (where I grew up learning the game of golf) is in the process of raising funds for a cancer charity that is close to my heart, and that of some of the members who helped me on my way in the world of golf.

If there is anything you can contribute to the cause, no matter how big or small, please use the QR code below.

No pressure, no expectations, just some charitable outreach on my part if this is something you can get behind…

I hope you enjoyed this issue and it helps your game!
